According to the oral traditions passed down through generations and the revelations recorded through the Deva Prashnam, the history of Kaalamkulangara Sree Mahadeva Temple is believed to date back approximately five centuries.

In ancient times, the place where the temple now stands was believed to have been a Brahmin household (Brahmana Graham). According to tradition, a Vedic Brahmin from Orayiyathum Manakkal, one of the ancient Ooralma families associated with the temple, undertook a period of devotional worship (bhajanam) at the Ernakulam Shiva Temple, praying for the blessing of a child.

As time passed, due to advancing age, he found it increasingly difficult to travel to Ernakulam to continue his worship. Pleased with his unwavering devotion and service, Lord Mahadeva is believed to have appeared before him and revealed that His divine presence would manifest in his own homeland.

As a divine indication of His presence, Nandikeswara was subsequently revealed at the present temple pond premises. This sacred occurrence is believed to have marked the beginning of the temple's establishment.

Following this divine revelation, approximately nine Brahmin families came together and constructed the temple, establishing it as a sacred centre of worship. Over the course of time, the number of Ooralma families gradually became limited to two — Orayiyathum Mana and Pattassery Mana.

The temple is regarded as one of the rare and ancient temples in Kerala where Lord Mahadeva faces west, a distinctive feature that adds to its historical and spiritual significance.

The principal deity is revered as Mrityunjaya Rudra, the compassionate form of Lord Shiva who is believed to have rescued and blessed Markandeya from death. Alongside this divine presence, devotees seek the blessings of Kaalamkulangara Thappan, revered as the bestower of all cherished wishes and the fulfiller of devotees' prayers.
