Iringole Kaalamkulangara Sree Mahadeva Temple is regarded as one of the rare and ancient temples in Kerala where the sanctum is situated below the surrounding ground level and faces west. This distinctive architectural and spiritual character adds greatly to the temple's historical significance.

The presiding deity, Kaalamkulangara Thappan, is revered in the sacred form of Mrityunjaya Rudra, the compassionate manifestation of Lord Shiva who, according to tradition, rescued and blessed Markandeya from death.
